ALJON Mariano and Kevin Ferrer sparked a telling 10-0 windup to steer University of Santo Tomas past erstwhile unbeaten Ateneo, 63-57, on Saturday for its first win in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup.
Mariano scored four straight points to put UST ahead for good, before Ferrer converted the game-clinching three-pointer from the deep left corner in leading the Tigers to victory against the same team that beat them for the UAAP championship last season.
The loss was the first in four matches for the Eagles, the reigning five-time UAAP men's cage champions, who in turn lost to the Tigers in the last Philippine Collegiate Champions League finals.
Mariano’s fadeaway basket tied the count at 57, before he scored on a spin move for a 59-57 UST lead. After Kiefer Ravena missed on a fadeaway try, Ferrer buried a triple from the left corner with 45.8 seconds left to seal the win.
Mariano went on to finish with 10 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. Ferrer added 13 points including two triples.
UST (1-1) won despite scoring only nine points in the second quarter.
“Sumabog kami noong first half kasi nag-kanya-kanya kami, hindi ito ‘yung UST talaga,” said UST assistant coach Estong Ballesteros. “Kaya nung halftime, winake-up call ko ‘yung mga bata.”
Ballesteros called the shots for UST in the absence of head coach Pido Jarencio, who's attending to his deputy coaching duties with Petron in the PBA.
“’Yung sistema, kailangan lang namin i-follow. “Kung ano pinapa-follow sa amin ni coach Pido, sundin lang namin,” Ballesteros said.
Chris Newsome had a spectacular outing in his first TV game, posting 14 points and 12 rebounds. He sparked a 10-1 Ateneo run for a 57-53 advantage, highlighting the play with a breakaway dunk at the 2:29 mark.
But it was not for the Blue Eagles who failed to contain Mariano and Ferrer in the endgame.
The Tigers, who lost their openig match against La Salle last week, won after trailing 23-30 at the half.
