Guiao wants 'closer look' at Fil-Am Remy Martin ahead of World Cup

    Mar 15, 2019

YENG Guiao has heard enough about Remy Martin and seen enough highlight reels of the US NCAA Division I player to pique his interest.

    There's just one problem.

"You can't recruit a player based on what you see in a YouTube video," said the Team Pilipinas coach when asked about possible changes to the Team Pilipinas lineup ahead of the 2019 Fiba World Cup in China.

However, Guiao has been impressed enough with that he has seen so far from the six-foot sparkplug to want a closer look at the player who has been making waves as Arizona State's starting point guard.

Martin, whose mother, the former Mary Ann Macaspac, is Filipina, was previously recruited by former national coach Chot Reyes to be part of his '23 for 23' pool for the Fiba World Cup which the country will host in 2023.

But the 20-year old spitfire guard has made a lot of headway in his career since, averaging 13.5 points, 5.2 assists and 3.2 rebounds while exploding for a number of big games in his second season with the Sun Devils.

No wonder Guiao is interested to bring him over.

"We hope to invite him to the country so we can take a closer look," said Guiao, who is also open to visiting the Fil-Am guard in the US.

Either way, a personal meeting, Guiao said, will also allow the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to validate if Martin has indeed acquired a Philippine passport, as claimed in previous reports.

"We need to validate that, too," said Guiao, who said he plans to make 'one or two changes' at the most to the Team Pilipinas 14-man pool for the sixth window of the 2019 Fiba World Cup qualifiers.
