YENG Guiao has been formally appointed head coach of Gilas Pilipinas and will hold the post until the 2019 Fiba Basketball World Cup.
Guiao took over from Chot Reyes in an interim capacity after the Gilas-Pilipinas brawl last July, but Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio made his appointment in a statement on Wednesday.
“We, at the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, confirm the appointment of Mr. Joseller “Yeng” Guiao as head coach of the Gilas Pilipinas basketball team,” said Panlilio.
“He takes charge in the formation and training of the Gilas Pilipinas basketball team. His main responsibilities will be to lead Gilas to successfully compete against the other national teams during the 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournament and to qualify for the 2019 FIBA World Cup.”
“This appointment will be up to the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China,” Panlilio added.
Since taking over, the concurrent NLEX coach has coached the national team in the 2018 Asian Games and the fourth window of the Fiba Basketball World Cup qualifiers.
