TEAM Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao wants a long preparation for the national squad bound for the Fiba Basketball World Cup in China.

Guiao told reporters at the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum at Amelie Hotel Manila on Tuesday that he has submitted a proposal to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) for a preparation longer than the 10 days given to Team Pilipinas in previous campaigns.

“Today nag-submit ako ng very simple proposal to the SBP and the SBP will now relay the proposal formally to the (PBA) commissioner so that it can be taken up to the board,” said Guiao.

“We are hoping we can start earlier. Kung matatandaan natin, ‘yung previous windows natin, nagkaroon tayo ng 10-day break, 12-day break saka na lang nakakapag-focus totally sa preparation … I’m asking for more than 12 days of continuous daily practice sana. Kung puwede, isang buwan,” he added.

Guiao said he wants to begin the preparations as early as June to strengthen its chances of winning in the World Cup set August 31 to September 15 in China.

“Pero bago ‘yung buwan, if we can start maybe by mid-June na twice a day. That means sa June, we can have four days of practice. By July, twice a day, eight days of practice bago maumpisahan na ‘yung daily practice hanggang August 31,” said Guiao.

Gilas is bracketed in Group D with Serbia, Italy, and Angola, and will play in Foshan, China. The Philippines will play Italy on August 31, Serbia on September 2, and Angola on September 4.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial, who was also the guest in the forum sponsored by San Miguel, Pagcor, Amelie Hotel and Philippine Sports Commission, said the board is set to discuss the plans for Gilas Pilipinas in Thursday’s board meeting.
