RAIN or Shine coach Caloy Garcia acknowledges that Yeng Guiao is better equipped to handle the squad if the plan to bring the core of the Elastopainters to the 2018 Asian Games materializes.
Rain or Shine team owner Raymond Yu said on Thursday the Elastopainters are being eyed to make up the bulk of the Philippine squad that will play in the Asian Games. There are also talks that the team is looking to tap former Rain or Shine coach and now NLEX mentor Guiao to handle the squad.
The initial plan was to send the TNT core for the Asian Games, but Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is looking at other options since KaTropa players Terrence Romeo, Jayson Castro, RR Pogoy and Troy Rosario were four of the 10 suspended players by Fiba for the Fiba Basketball World Cup Asian qualifiers following their role in the brawl against Australia.
While flattered by the report, Guiao, feels it should be Garcia who should handle the team.
Garcia though feels otherwise, saying Guiao should handle the Asiad-bound team if the plan to bring in the Rain or Shine core pushes through. He says he doesn’t mind stepping aside because of Guiao’s vast experience in international basketball, being a former national team coach.
“I think that’s the plan. Kung sakaling totoo nga ‘yung mangyayari na kukuha sa players namin, I think Boss Raymond wants coach Yeng to call the shots kasi internationally, I never handled the team in international (competitions). It is better to get somebody na may experience,” said Garcia.
Garcia said he is also looking forward to a reunion with his former head coach.
“Okay na siya,” Garcia said. “Mas gusto ko siya na lang para magkabalikan kami.”
