THREE days before departing for the Jones Cup in Taipei unfolds, Gilas Pilipinas showed flashes of brilliance in beating Phoenix, 39-37, in a three-set scrimmage at the Upper Deck Gym in Pasig on Tuesday.
Matthew Wright tormented his mother PBA team as he hit the game-winning floater with 35 seconds left for Gilas in a glorified tuneup game that lasted 18 minutes.
But the biggest highlight came in the dying seconds of the second set when Kiefer Ravena sent John Wilson crashing with a crossover before pulling up for a 25-23 lead.
Both teams traded baskets after that until Christian Standhardinger completed an and-one play that set the table up for Wright's game-winner.
Despite going 4-of-4 in their tuneup games, Gilas head coach Chot Reyes is still far from satisfied with the team that will take on some of Asia's top teams in the July 15-23 showpiece in Chinese-Taipei.
"I like the fact that we came out and competed but I was very disappointed by the fact that we had some careless turnovers," he said.
Present during the two-hour training were Bobby Ray Parks Jr., Kevin Ferrer, Wright, KRavena, Jio Jalalon, Kobe Paras, Mike Tolomia, Standhardinger, Ed Daquioag, Carl Cruz, import Mike Myers, Roger Pogoy, Fonzo Gotladera, Mac Belo, Raymar Jose, and Almond Vosotros.
