BOCAUE – The Philippines just cemented its status as truly the hotbed of basketball in the world.
A massive crowd of 38,115 showed up for the game between the Philippines and Dominican Republic on Friday night to set a new record attendance in FIBA World Cup history.

The figures broke the 29-year-old record of 32,616 fans who witnessed the 1994 World Cup finals between the United States and Russia held at the Skydome in Toronto, Canada. Bannered by the so-called ‘Dream Team II,’ the Americans trounced the Russians, 137-91, for the title.
Ten years ago, the Philippines was also recognized with the Most Valuable Fans (MVF) Best Country award during the 2014 World Cup in Spain as flag-waving, feet-stomping Filipino fans eagerly cheered Gilas Pilipinas team in its first foray in the world championships after a 35-year absence.
