Versatile Troy Rosario gets Seaba chance to become comfortable in small-forward position

FOR much of his career, Troy Rosario has been most comfortable playing the power forward position.

Though he has played small forward at times for TnT KaTropa in the PBA, his stint with Gilas Pilipinas in the 2017 Seaba Championship has prompted him to further develop his skills on the wing.

In the hosts 106-51 victory over Malaysia on Sunday night, Rosario once again played some minutes as a 'three' while playing alongside Japeth Aguilar and Raymond Almazan.

Rosario shared he had an inkling that national coach Chot Reyes would try him out in the small forward spot after being made to play in that position in most of the national team's practices.

That, he hopes, would make him versatile enough to eventually play three different positions.

"Familiar naman ako sa puwesto ng three, pina-practice naman. Sa practice nilalagay ako ni Coach Chot (Reyes) sa position na three," said Rosario, who finished with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting in 18 minutes.

"Pinagaaralan ko lahat yung 3-4-5 para maging flexible. Para if ever na magkaron g problema, may ma-foul trouble, atleast pwede akong bumaba sa three spot," he added.

The 6-foot-7 former National University star, however, admitted he still has a long way to go before he can be really comfortable in the position.

But if there's one thing that he's getting a hang of, it's learning to defend quicker guys on the perimeter - a skill that will surely pay dividends for him in the long run.

"Di pa ganun ka-kumportable, ang importante sa three position is yung depensa e. Lalong-lalo na dun sa ball screen defense. Pwede ako makipag-switch sa mga ball screens so mas mapapadali yun sa three position," said the second pick overall of the 2016 PBA draft.

But if he's struggling to get used to the position, he's definitely not showing it as he's been one of the most consistent guys for Reyes, averaging 12 points and five rebounds on an average of 15 minutes off the bench through three games.

For Rosario, that's just a result of plain hard work.

"Nilalaro ko lang laro ko talaga. Yung sa rebounding, sa hustle. Di ko hinahanap yung puntos ko bigla bigla nalang dumadating."
