PHILIPPINE Olympic Committee (POC) president Ricky Vargas is seeking fairness from the NBA following reports that China will be fielding two active players in the 2018 Asian Games.

Reports from Indonesia said China will have on its roster Zhou Qi and Ding Yanyuhang, who are under contract with the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks, respectively.

Vargas’ statement came on the heels of the NBA decision not to allow Jordan Clarkson to play for the Philippines, on the premise that the Asian Games is not among the tournaments the NBA is mandated to release it players under an agreement with Fiba.

“We seek fairness from the NBA. They cited a rule disallowing Jordan Clarkson from playing for the Philippines. Are we to understand that the same rule does not apply to the Chinese NBA players?

“We are faced with a confusing situation. China has submitted a lineup that includes Zhou Qi and Ding Yanyuhang, current NBA players,” said Vargas.

Incidentally, the Philippines and China are bracketed together in Group D of the Asian Games basketball competition.

Vargas said the Philippines deserves an explanation on the issue.

“NBA, please enlighten us. Isn’t China subject to the same rule that the NBA caused on Clarkson not allowing him to play for the Philippine team? Or did China simply disobey? And if so, what now?” Vargas said.

POC chairman Abraham Tolentino also issued a statement, saying the NBA should be consistent with its rules.

“I am shocked at the news that China is presenting a lineup with two NBA players. We were told that the NBA does not allow its players to play in tournaments such as the Asian Games. We hope that the NBA will be consistent with its rulings and give us a fair shake. This should not be too much to ask,” Tolentino said.
