GILAS Pilipinas experienced travel problems on its way to New Zealand on Saturday in its final stretch of preparations for Window 3 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
In a Facebook post, Gilas Pilipinas assistant coach Sean Chambers said Gilas Pilipinas left Brisbane at 9 a.m. bound for Wellington but their flight was rerouted to Auckland due to the weather conditions in the New Zealand capital.
However, Chambers said they stayed at the tarmac in Auckland for four hours and were initially told to return to Brisbane due to customs until they were finally given clearance two hours later.
Chambers said they made it at a hotel at midnight.
“Tough travel day yesterday,” wrote Chambers.
Gilas Pilipinas is scheduled to play the Property Brokers Jets on Sunday night as part of its build-up for their games against New Zealand on July 3 and Australia on July 6.
