SCOTTIE Thompson sustained an ankle sprain on Monday in Gilas Pilipinas’ game against Guam, and head coach Tim Cone hopes for the best.
Thompson sprained his left ankle during the 7:08-mark of the fourth quarter of Gilas Pilipinas’ 95-71 win over Guam – the tailend of Window 1 before the national team returns to their mother ballclubs.
Cone is concerned especially since Thompson is also his player with Barangay Ginebra in the PBA.

“We don’t know,” said Cone on the extent of Thompson’s injury. “That’s always the next day kind of injury. He definitely sprained his ankle, not a first degree. Maybe a second or third degree.”
Thompson has time to heal as Barangay Ginebra’s next game will be on December 10 against Blackwater. His status is crucial since the Gin Kings are currently in a tie for seventh place with Meralco in the team standings with a 3-4 win-loss record.
“We have until the 10th of December to get him ready to play. Hopefully, he’ll be ready because that’s one guy we can’t lose at Ginebra obviously. But that’s just a sacrifice you make for playing for the national team,” said Thompson.
Gilas Pilipinas has dealt with ankle injuries including that of Cjay Perez and Calvin Oftana during the FIBA Asia Cup 2025.
“Cjay went down and had a bad ankle sprain. Calvin got injured in the Asia Cup. It’s just part of it and you hope it doesn’t happen. But again, that’s the sacrifice you make playing for the national team because you’re going to be playing against physical guys and big bodies and there’s a good chance you might get hurt at some point,” said Cone.
