CHOOKS to Go head honcho and national team backer Ronald Mascarinas has some strong words for basketball stakeholders which keep their players from suiting up for the national team.
Speaking during the launch of Chooks 3x3 program on Tuesday morning, the chairman and president of Bounty Agro Ventures aired his frustration over issues that deprive the national team of the top players.
“Ang point ko lang, the needs of the country should always come first. Country first before your school, country first before your ballclub. But what’s happening right now is yourself first before your country,” said Mascarinas.
“Yun ang gusto namin mabago. Because that’s wrong. Very wrong. Itong sports is a good vehicle to send that message,” he added.
Mascarinas said officials have been too nice in dealing with the club vs country and school vs country rows, urging top stakeholders to 'shame' those who stand against efforts to put together the best national team possible.
“They should be shamed. Everytime they do that, dapat ipamukha sa kanila na nakakahiya yung ginagawa nila. Right now everybody is being polite,” said Mascarinas.
“Presidente ng isang iskwelahan sasabihin niya na hindi pwedeng ipahiram ang player dahil may tournament kami, dapat ipamukha sa kanya ng publiko na mali ang kanyang sagot. We cannot continue to keep quiet about it pretending that it is all right cause it is not all right. In fact, bastos yun.”
With that in mind, Mascarinas and his group are already looking one step ahead with regard to plans to form a competitive national 3x3 pool.
The group will be holding tryouts all over the Philippines for potential players which will join Kobe Paras in the 3x3 squad.
“Yung ibang stakeholders, if they’re not cooperative, if they will not change their mindset, we don’t mind because we’re reaching out to grassroots all over the country,” Mascarinas continued.
“We’ll reach beyond the collegiate level, beyond the organized basketball leagues in the country, we will scour for talent to form a competitive national (3x3) team.”
