TEAM Pilipinas will not only be concerned about the play of Kazakhstan in their road game in the Fiba Basketball World Cup Asian qualifiers, but also the weather.
National coach Yeng Guiao said he is bracing for cold weather that can go as low as negative 20 degrees Celsius when Gilas Pilipinas goes up against Kazakhstan on February 24 at the Republican Velodrome Saryarka in Astana, Kazakhstan.
“Isa pa ring pinaghahandaan namin ngayon is the -20 temperature in Kazakhstan,” Guiao said. “Ako, hindi ko pa nae-experience maglaro sa -20. Baka ibang klaseng experience ‘yun for the players. I don’t know if somebody has played in a country where it is -20.”
Guiao is also preparing for any possibility, including an even colder conditions at the venue.
“Ang balita ko, papatayin ‘yung heater sa gym, magbubukas ng aircon tapos tatapatan tayo ng electric fan,” said Guiao in jest.
The weather conditions could pose a problem for Gilas, which lost to Kazakhstan, 92-88, at the Mall of Asia Arena last November 30.
Guiao said they will try their best to simulate the weather conditions in Kazakhstan here in the country, while also preparing to bring appropriate clothing such as thicker jackets.
“We are trying to prepare in terms of extra equipment. ‘Yung pang-ilalim na uniform, heating pads while they are on the bench, ‘yung mga warm-up clothes nila. It might not suffice kung regular jogging pants lang or jacket. We are trying to put together a plan just in case masyadong malamig,” said Guiao.
