GILAS Pilipinas coach Tab Baldwin insisted there was little ‘head-to-head selections’ made in the process of choosing the final 12 man of the national team preparing for the Fiba Asia Championships.
The American-New Zealander mentor in particularly said the selection did not boil down as to between Gary David and JC Intal would make the cut.
Intal was considered a surprise pick over David, a member of Gilas 2.0 which saw action in the Fiba World Cup last year in Spain.
“Whoever said we chose between the two? We chose twelve,” Baldwin said after the team’s first official practice Wednesday night.
“There weren’t many head-to-head selections that the coaches discussed,” he added. “We were trying to say which fives work well for us.”
And Baldwin believes the final lineup present the most options to be successful as the team vies for a spot in the Rio Olympics next year.
“You have so many things to think about – defense, rebounding, shooting, attacking, and penetration – and there’s so many combinations of five that we felt these twelve presented us with the most dangerous fives that we could assemble,” Baldwin said.
