AFTER Asia, the world is next.
There’s no rest for the weary as the Gilas Pilipinas women’s team returns to Singapore on Friday to compete in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup qualifier.
Fresh from a historic silver-medal finish in the just-concluded 3x3 Asia Cup, the quartet of Kacey Dela Rosa, Afril Bernardino, Mikka Cacho, and Cheska Apag will now try to get to the next level as they shoot for a spot in the 3x3 World Cup slated in Warsaw, Poland from June 1-7 this year.
Gilas returned from its Singapore campaign on Monday as Dela Rosa had to attend classes at Ateneo, but will leave again on Friday for the April 11-12 competition.
Six teams are vying for three slots at stake in the World Cup.
The Philippines is bracketed in Pool B along with Singapore and Brazil, while New Zealand, Egypt, and Hungary comprise Pool A.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas women’s 3x3 program director Ryan Gregorio explained that top two teams in each pool after Round 1 will advance to the crossover Round 2, where the pool top seeds face the second ranked from the opposite group.
Round 2 winners qualify directly to the World Cup, while the losing teams dispute the remaining berth to Poland.
The Philippines earned a berth to the World Cup qualifier by virtue of a higher ranking last year, according to Gregorio.
Already qualified are Australia, China, Japan, Mongolia, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Serbia, Spain, Puerto Rico, the United States, and Madagascar.
