Standhardinger on team-up with Abueva: 'We'll be a handful (for Gilas rivals)'

    Jul 31, 2017

THE last time they met, Christian Standhardinger and Calvin Abueva faced off in physical plays that led to a commotion during a tune-up game between Gilas and Alaska.

But there was no sign of animosity between the two intense players on Monday, when Abueva finally showed up in the national team's practice for the Fiba Asia Cup.

Standhardinger, who took the place of Andray Blatche as Gilas' naturalized player, and Abueva were seen talking to each other in between drills and scrimmages during the two-hour training at the Meralco Gym.

"We already said hi to each other. We talked about our families and our grandmas," said the Fil-German slotman with a smile.

Standhardinger said they immediately buried the hatchet after that July tune-up game. He had nothing but kind words about the Alaska superstar.

"He's a great guy. I can't wait to play with him," he said of Abueva.

The 6-foot-8 slotman believes he and Abueva will be a handful for opponents when they face taller teams in the August 8-20 conclave in Beirut, Lebanon.

"I think so (we can make a great tandem). We're gonna be great. We're gonna be a handful. It's gonna be fun for coach to control us," he said.
