Sharpened by daily practices, Gilas ready on eve of Taipei match

TAIPEI—Finally with the benefit of daily practices here, Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes is happy the team is beginning to show its form heading into Friday’s match against Chinese Taipei in the Fiba Basketball World Cup Asia qualifiers.

Gilas has been in the Taiwan capital since Monday where they have been holding daily training, contrary to back home where they settled for at least a once-a-week practice.

On the eve of the match in the third window on the road against Chinese Taipei, Reyes said the team was sharp in practice on Thursday night.

“I thought we had a great practice today,” said Reyes after the team’s practice at the Taipei Heping Gymnasium. “We are seeing the effects of four days of practice and the big value of coming in and having a full complement of players."

All 15 players in the pool for the third window practiced on Thursday including Carl Bryan Cruz, Baser Amer, and Troy Rike, who didn’t make it to the final 12.

Gilas was in high spirits at the end of Thursday’s practice when utility Bong Tulabot hit a halfcourt shot, beating out all the players in the team. Players chased him around the arena following the converted shot with Tulabot winning a cash prize for hitting the heave at midcourt.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial as well as members of the board from San Miguel, MVP Group, GlobalPort, Phoenix, and Alaska treated Gilas to dinner on the eve of match.

Reyes, however, said Gilas still has work to do if the national squad wants to beat Chinese Taipei on its home floor. Still, Reyes said being able to maximize their stay here with great practices is a good sign for the team.

“But we have no illusions; we are nowhere near where we want to be. Given all the limitations, I thought we had a sharp practice,” said Reyes.
