SCOTTIE Thompson got the capacity crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena on its feet on Monday night when he won a battle for the rebound against men a head taller than him and dished off to June Mar Fajardo for an easy basket.
That was just one of a number of impressive plays pulled off by the high-flying Barangay Ginebra guard, who finished with six rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench in the Fiba World Cup qualifier against Iran.
“Best way for me as a player na makatulong sa team, sa bansa,” said Thompson. “Talagang binuhos ko na lahat kung anong meron ako sa game. Talagang kahit sa bench, nag-pray ako na bigyan ako ng lakas para makatulong sa team.”
Unfortunately, the highlight play went for naught as Team Pilipinas suffered a 78-70 loss to Iran after the visitors scored the last nine points of the contest, with Thompson committing a costly turnover in the final minute.
With Iran up three, Thompson threw an errant inbound pass that led to an easy basket by Iran with 22.5 seconds left.
If only he can take it back.
“Dami naming lapses sa dulo. Talagang wala din ako masabi. Nag-turnover din ako sa dulo. I don’t know. Masakit para sa akin. Sa hometown pa natin,” said Thompson.
Thompson said the experience – both the good and the bad – will make him a better player, both in the PBA and in the international battle field.
“As a team, dami lang talaga naming lapses. I think ‘yung dulo, nangyari din sa amin sa Kazakhstan. Lumabas pa ‘yung sa team na ‘yung flow namin, kulang pa. Charge ko sa experience as a player.
"Excited to be better as a team at siyempre, para sa personal career ko,” said the former Perpetual Help star.
