THE Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) heralded a new era for Philippine basketball by adopting a new logo for both the federation and Gilas Pilipinas.

The new design was formally unveiled on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in a ceremony presided over by no less than SBP president Al Panlilio in time for the country's coming campaign in the FIBA World Cup in China this August.

Panlilion described the new federation logo as just a ‘slight refresh' from the original design first made when the SBP took over the old Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) n 2007,

It's the Gilas logo which has ‘more of a big change’ he stressed.

“Yung Philippine eagle is still there, but yung rendition niya is quite different, with an emerging basketball, showing our love for the game obviously. And the italicize font illustrates the ball motion towards a bright future for the sport.”

At the same time, Panlilio said Gilas Pilipinas will now be used across the national teams in men's basketball, women's basketball, youth and 3x3 basketball.

Panlilio said the men’s team will be called Gilas Pilipinas Men’s, while the women’s squad that was previously called Perlas Pilipinas will now be dubbed Gilas Pilipinas Women’s.

The Batang Gilas squad has been renamed Gilas Pilipinas Youth, while the 3x3 squad will be named Gilas Pilipinas 3x3.

With the exception of Yeng Guiao, all three coaches of the national teams, namely Ronnie Magsanoc (3x3 basketball), Patrick Aquino (women's basketball), and Sandy Arespacochaga (youth team) were all present during the affair.

Also in attendance were Jong Uichico (SBP Coaches Academy), SBP Special Assistant to the President Ryan Gregorio, Gilas men’s team officials Gabby Cui and Butch Antonio, PBA marketing head Gelo Serrano, and Cignal TV President and CEO Jane Basas and Sienna Olaso (vice president of Channel and Content).
