THE Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) felt sad to see former Gilas Pilipinas deputy Alex Compton go, but wishes the good-natured coach all the best in his next endeavor.

“We wish him all the best in his future undertakings,” said Ryan Gregorio, special assistant to SBP president Al S. Panlilio when asked about the decision of the 46-year-old Compton to relocate to the U.S. with his family following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While Compton was indeed, tapped as part of the national team coaching staff under interim mentor Mark Dickel during the first window of the Asian Cup qualifiers, Gregorio clarified the deal was not on a full-time basis.

“He was included in the previous window, but there was no long-term agreement signed by coach Alex and the federation,” said the SBP official on Wednesday.

That perhaps explains Compton’s painstaking decision to leave the country where he was born and which serves as home to him for more than two decades.

The national team stint was the second one for the former Alaska coach after serving as lead deputy to former Gilas mentor Tab Baldwin, now the SBP project director, during the 2015 Asian Men’s Basketball Championship and the FIBA Olympic Qualifier the following year.

In as much as it appreciates all the help Compton extended to the national cause, the SBP understands his choice to look for the welfare of his family at this point in time.

“The SBP respects the decision of coach Alex to fly back to the U.S.,” said Gregorio.

Compton's departure left Gilas Pilipinas without the best possible option to handle the team in its second window campaign in the Asian Cup qualifiers.

Dickel is currently with TnT Tropang Giga inside the PBA bubble together with assistant coaches Sandy Arespacochaga and Topex Robinson.
