CALVIN Abueva has barely broken a sweat in Gilas Pilipinas' debut game in the Fiba Asia Cup after coming off the bench against defending champion China on Wednesday night.
A little over a minute later, he was gone.
Retaliating after he was wrestled to the floor by Li Gen during a rebound play, 'The Beast' was immediately thrown out of the game after giving the hulking Chinese forward a head butt.
After a huddle, the referees called a disqualifying foul on Abueva, who was sent back to the locker room with 2:27 left in the first quarter and Gilas in command against China.
More than the disappointment of losing a vital piece of its already undermanned lineup against strong team like China, Gilas fans were understandably worried that Abueva might merit an automatic suspension over the ejection.
The concerns were immediately allayed by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Sonny Barrios, who assured that there is no provision in the Fiba rulebook that slaps an automatic suspension for any infraction.
"No auto suspension in Fiba," Barrios assured SPIN.ph.
A check on the Fiba rules verified Barrios' claim.
So rest assured Abueva will be back in action for Gilas' game against Iraq on Friday despite the ejection.
