A SAMAHANG Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) selection committee is expected to come up with a short list of candidates to succeed Gilas Pilipinas’ Chot Reyes when it convenes on Wednesday afternoon.
Among the many names that have been floated since SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan ordered the search for the Gilas coach, Talk ‘N Text coach Jong Uichico, Texters’ consultant Tab Baldwin and even Meralco coach Norman Black appear to have the inside track due to their recent involvement with the national team.
Uichico and Black both served as assistants of Reyes since last year’s Fiba Asia men’s championships, where the Philippines managed to place second to punch a ticket to the 2014 Fiba World Cup in Spain.
Baldwin, on the other hand, served as one of Gilas’ consultants during that time.
Historically, Black and Uichico have also served as head coaches when they handled the national men’s team in the 1994 and 2002 Asian Games, respectively.
“Tingin ko, mga two to three (candidates) ang puwedeng i-submit ng selection committee kay MVP,” a source told Spin.ph on Tuesday.
However, the same source said the selection committee may not necessarily be limiting its choices to the three since the names of Purefoods Star coach Tim Cone, Rain or Shine’s Yeng Guiao, as well as legendary basketball figure Robert Jaworski have also been mentioned in recent weeks.
Cone, Guiao and Jaworski previously handled the national squads with the 'Big J coaching the first all-pro men’s team that brought home a silver medal from the 1990 Beijing Asian Games in China.
Cone, in the meantime, handled the Philippine Centennial team that captured the bronze medal in the 1998 Asiad in Bangkok while Guiao coached the national squad starring Cyrus Baguio and James Yap in the 2009 Fiba Asia men’s championships in Tianjin, China.
