SAMAHANG Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) chief Al Panlilio was elected second vice-president of the FIBA Asia Central Board on Monday, reinforcing the Philippines' status as a basketball power in the region.
The election was held during the FIBA Asia general assembly in Bengaluru, India where Qatari Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani was re-elected president.
Akram Halabi of Lebanon was voted first vice-president while former NBA player and Hall of Famer Yao Ming was elected chairman.
Panlilio was grateful for the chance to work with Al Thani in his third term as president of FIBA Asia and likewise expressed his thanks to Executive Director for Asia Hagop Khaijirian for the support.
"I am looking forward to working even more closely with Mr. Hagop and the rest of the FIBA Asia Board led by President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani," said Panlilio in a text message.
"I hope I can contribute in the further development of basketball not only in Asia but globally in alignment with FIBA headquarter's objective of making basketball the number one sport in the world."
As part of FIBA Asia, the SBP is going to be well represented in the board and will be part of the policy-making body to ensure the continuous growth of basketball in the region.
