IT was a short parting of ways between coach Yeng Guiao and one-time deputy Sandy Arespacochaga.
Arespacochaga was reunited with his former NLEX mentor after being tapped as additional scout for Team Pilipinas as it bids to complete a sweep of its two games in the final window of the Fiba World Cup qualifiers.
The former Ateneo player has been with the national team coaching staff since last week to act as advance scout – along with Ford Arao - in the Filipinos’ final game against Kazakhstan on Feb. 24.
Arespacochaga coming on board Team Pilipinas reunited him with Guiao, with who he worked with at NLEX for two years until his transfer to TnT Katropa just before the new PBA season began.
“Sila ni coach Ford will go ahead sa Kazakshtan and scout the game of Kazakshtan while we’re playing in Qatar,” said Guiao.
“So we’re sending both of them earlier so mawawala si coach Ford at Sandy sa Qatar dahil panonoorin nila yung game ng Kazakhstan. Advance scouts sila bale. We’re just trying to cover all the bases.”
Kazakshtan battles top seed Australia in Astana on Feb. 21 on the same day the Filipinos take on the Qataris in Doha.
Apart from Arao and Arespacochaga, also part of Guiao's coaching staff are Caloy Garcia and Ryan Gregorio.
Guiao said it is imperative for Arespacochaga to join Arao ahead in the Kazakhstan trip especially with the current cold weather in the Central Asian country.
“We could do that with coach Ford, but yun nga, medyo malungkot masyado dun sa Kazakhstan kasi masyadong maginaw. Baka makatulog siya, hindi magising, at least dalawa silang may alarm,” Guiao kidded.
The national team is set to leave for the crucial window of the qualifier on Feb. 16.
