BOCAUE, Bulacan — RR Pogoy wants to have another opportunity to play 3x3 and show the world that the Philippines is also world-class in this brand of basketball.
The Gilas Pilipinas mainstay played with Troy Rosario, Christian Standhardinger and Stanley Pringle in the Fiba 3x3 World Cup but the Philippine squad fell short of the quarterfinals with third place in Pool C.
The Philippines lost by an average margin of 2.5 points against Canada and Mongolia, defeats that proved to be crucial in its bid for the quarterfinals.
Pogoy said he wants another chance, knowing Filipinos can play a lot better as they become more familiar with 3x3 game.
“Oo gusto ko,” said Pogoy, when asked if he will accept an offer to play again for the Philippine 3x3 team when it happens.
That the Philippines came close to giving Canada a defeat before squeezing out a 20-19 win was enough reason for Pogoy to believe the Filipino ballers can excel in the game.
“Nagpapasalamat ako dahil nanalo kami sa last (game). Sayang lang talaga ’yung Canada. Para sa atin na sana, parang kinuha lang nila sa atin,” Pogoy said during the postgame press conference.
“Dapat matuto tayo sa experience na ‘yun. Puro kami first timer, may mga bagong rules,” he added.
Following the heartbreaking defeat against Canada, Pogoy said the Philippine team was determined to finish out strong in the tournament, and was able to edge Russia, 19-12, in the final game of the preliminaries.
“Pinanood namin ‘yung game against Canada. Talagang nasayangan lang kami pero ganun talaga. May nananalo, may natatalo. Siguro first timer kami, di pa kami masyadong sanay sa 3-on-3,” said Pogoy.
The TNT KaTropa and former Far Eastern University standout now looks forward to a better future for the Philippines in 3x3 following the experience in playing against the world’s best in the Fiba 3x3 World Cup.
“Siguro dapat matuto lang kami kasi may mga ibang tournament pa daw next time,” Pogoy said.
