BOCAUE — Italy moved on to the 2018 Fiba 3x3 World Cup women’s tournament semifinals with a big upset over United States, 17-14, on Tuesday at Philippine Arena.
Rae Lin D’Alie drained the huge go-ahead two-pointer, before Guilia Clavarella put the game out of reach as the Italians held a 14-10 lead within the final two minutes to stun the Americans.
That set Italy up to a collission course against China, which earlier beat Hungary, 17-14.
Defending champion Russia also proceeded to the final four, with a 21-14 thumping of Czech Republic.
The Russians will meet France, which had to scrape past Spain, 19-17, in overtime.
With the game going to extra time, Christelle Diallo set up Alice Nayo and Johanna Tayeau for the game-clinching buckets to move on to the semifinals.
In the men’s division, Serbia continued its domination with a 21-8 rout of Mongolia.
Shooting for a hat-trick in the World Cup, the Serbians will next brace for Poland, which upset European champions Latvia, 21-15.
Netherlands advanced in the other semifinals with a close 18-16 escape past Canada thanks to the heroics of Dimeo Van Der Horst.
The Dutch will next clash against Slovenia, which downed Ukraine, 21-15, in their own quarterfinal duel.
