THE Philippines defeated Poland, 20-14, on Friday to move closer to a quarterfinal berth in the Fiba 3x3 Under-18 World Cup in Chengdu, China.

Juan Gomez de Liano and Encho Serrano showed the way for the Philippine squad, which improved its Pool A record to 2-1.

The Philippines needs to win against Turkmenistan, and hopes that second-running Israel (2-1) bows to top-seed Netherlands (3-0) in the other Pool A match.

The Filipinos took a 4-0 lead and never looked back.

Poland got to within 11-12 but the Philippines regained its bearings and grabbed a 15-11 advantage.

De Liano, Serrano, AJ Edu and Rhayyan Amsali beat Israel, 19-17, in the opener before losing to the Netherlands, 13-10.
