THE Philippine national team edged TNT, 78-76, on Saturday morning at the Moro Lorenzo Gym in their first and perhaps only tune-up match in preparation for the 2018 Asian Games men’s basketball tournament.
The Nationals were ahead for most of the match as they led, 62-53, at the end of the third period but the KaTropa made a late fightback that fell short.
Head coach Yeng Guiao expressed satisfaction with the play of the national squad considering the limited time they have to prepare for the competition.
The team was hastily-formed after the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) had a change of heart and decided to send a team to the Asian Games basketball competition.
“That is still good,” said Guiao on the two-point win. “What I saw is there is chemistry, there is natural flow in the game. They have a few more days to improve.
“Sa tatlo, apat na araw na ensayo, meron namang development,” said Guiao.
The Nationals will leave for Jakarta on Sunday night but the team will still have a walkthrough as they continue their preparation for the continental competition.
The Philippines start off its Asiad campaign on August 16 against Kazakhstan at the GBK Basketball Hall before taking on China on August 21.
