AS the Philippine men's 3x3 team heads to France for the Fiba 3x3 World Cup, coach Eric Altamirano expressed confidence of its chances against some of the world's top teams.
Kobe Paras, Kiefer Ravena, Jeron Teng and JR Quinahan will be bannering the Chooks to Go-backed squad in Nantes, starting from June 17-21.
"Strongest? Maybe not. But we were able to assemble the best available players for the tournament," said Altamirano in the team's formal send-off last Wednesday at Crowne Plaza.
"Really confident that these players will represent the country well," he added.
The Philippines is grouped with host France, Slovenia, Romania and El Salvador in Group B, with the top two teams advancing to the quarterfinals.
Altamirano admits that it's going to be a tough grind, considering that they'll be facing veteran teams in the tournament.
Save for Quinahan, no other player is older than 24, but that is something that they can turn into an advantage in the tournament, Altamirano said.
"Obviously the team is very young compared to the players in the World Cup but in terms of skills naman, halos lahat ng players natin are multi-skilled, they can play inside and outside," Altamirano.
Although experience might be something their foes have over them, the soft-spoken head coach is content that all of his players have already experienced what it's like to compete in these competitions.
"All of them have the experience in 3x3. Jeron has been there since the YOG (Youth Olympic Games), si Kiefer naman played in Dubai last year and si Kobe naman played in various Fiba competitions. That's something we can bring in the competition."
