PERTH, Western Australia - The Filipino community in Perth was hit with a wave of disappointment and concern after news broke that Gilas Pilipinas star Justin Brownlee will sit out the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers game against the Australia Boomers at RAC Arena due to multiple injuries.

The announcement dampened what had been a day filled with anticipation as hundreds of Filipino fans prepared to troop to the arena for Gilas’ first major international fixture on Australian soil in years.

Many fans who had travelled from across Western Australia expressed frustration but also understanding.

“Nakakabitin talaga. We came here excited to see Brownlee live,” said Perth resident Ricky Lerio, who planned to come to RAC Arena wearing a Justin Brownlee shirt. “He’s the heart of Gilas. You can feel the crowd’s energy drop when the news came out.”

“Of course we’re disappointed,” added Gil Mangoba, a sports leader in the community. “Brownlee is our go?'to guy. Australia is already a tough opponent — without him, it’s a huge challenge.”

Some fans noted that Brownlee’s absence changes the complexion of the match entirely, especially against an Australian squad featuring NBA and NBL-calibre talent like Tyrese Proctor and Bryce Cotton.

Despite the disappointment, the overwhelming sentiment was concern for Brownlee’s health.

“Injuries like that are serious. Hamstring plus knee issues? He shouldn’t risk it,” said Rex Caralos. “We want him healthy for the long run. Gilas needs him for the next windows.”

“Brownlee has given everything for the Philippines,” said Philippine Honorary Consul Melissa Aguasa. “He deserves to rest and recover properly. We’re praying for his speedy healing.”

Fans also pointed out that Brownlee has played through pain in previous tournaments, and that this time, the medical team’s decision was the right call.

Brownlee’s absence forces Gilas to rely heavily on its young core and role players like Dwight Ramos, Carl Tamayo and Juan Gomez De Liano, who had a big game against New Zealand..

Even with the disappointment, the Filipino community in Perth remains united.

“Brownlee or no Brownlee, Gilas pa rin,” said Consul Aguasa. “We’re here to show Australia how strong the Filipino spirit is.”
