NEW Gilas Pilipinas coach Tab Baldwin said he plans to name the members of the new national pool toward the end of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup after a thorough look at all the players in the import-laced tournament and consultation with the league's veteran coaches.

Baldwin explained that the mid-season conference is a perfect time for him to study the type of players he believes would be fit for national team duty in consultation with his soon-to-be-announced coaching staff.

So far, only Jimmy Alapag has named named to Baldwin’s coaching staff after the former Gilas and Talk 'N Text star announced his retirement. The former league MVP is also concurrently Talk ‘N Text team manager.

Expect Baldwin to be a fixture at ringside during games in the Commissioner's Cup.

“It’s (selection of players for Gilas) a long process. I’m certainly not gonna mention anything about the selection, but I’m gonna let the players do their jobs, while I’m gonna go to as many games as I can,” Baldwin told Spin.ph on Tuesday at the end of Talk 'N Text's tune-up game against Purefoods.

“There won’t be any dramatic occurrences anytime soon, but I’ll begin to name the coaching staff in conjunction with the SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas) and the PBA,as well as in conjunction with the organization,” he added.

“And maybe we’ll be able to announce the pool of players by end of the second conference, but before then, I won’t give any indication over one player over the other.”

Baldwin said he is careful not to mention any names at this point, saying he’d prefer to work with the coaching staff while getting the input of men from Alapag, who has been with the national team since the 2007 Fiba-Asia men’s championships under Chot Reyes.

The Gilas coach said he will also be getting inputs from veteran PBA coaches, saying he "values their opinion."

“I hope by the second conference, we’ll be putting the coaching staff together and I’ll be expecting the coaching staff to help me with their input, then go wider than that, and that is with the experienced PBA coaches because I value their opinion,” explained the 56-year-old veteran international coach.

Baldwin likewise, welcomed Alapag as one of the members of his coaching staff, describing the 'Mighty Mouse' as someone who can provide valuable insight.

“Today, only Jimmy’s name has been announced. And that’s exciting to have a player of his stature and caliber to move to coaching,” beamed Baldwin. “His experience as a player and his relationships with other players, he’s got a lot to learn but he’s a clever guy.”
