Terrence Romeo reminds Gilas teammates to stay on their toes in Seaba

CEBU – Stressing he and Calvin Abueva can’t always be there to the rescue for Gilas Pilipinas, Terrence Romeo is reminding his teammates to never let their guard down in the bigger battles against international competition ahead.

Romeo and Abueva provided the biggest sparks off the bench against the Visayas All-Stars, leading Gilas to a come-from-behind 125-112 win on Sunday night in the teams only tune-up game before the Southeast Asian Basketball Association Championship from May 12-18.

But if they can’t put up a great start against the Visayas All-Stars in a game with nothing at stake, what more against  opponents in the Seaba wars that dangles a berth to the Fiba Asia Cup?

“Kailangan hindi kami pupunta sa game na sobrang kumpyansa, kundi pupunta kami sa game na prepared, ready to play tapos wala kaming mamaliitin na team,” Romeo said.

“Kailangan every second or every minute pag nandun kami sa loob ng court, kailangan maramdaman ng kalaban namin na kami yung mas desidido manalo.

“Kasi ‘di rin magiging madali yung mga makakalaban namin so kailangan mag-focus kami,” the GlobalPort superstar added.

Romeo registered 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting – half of his makes from beyond the arc, on top of four assists and two boards without committing a single turnover in 26 minutes off the bench against Visayas to be named the All-Star game’s Cloudfone-MVP.

“Naka-tsamba,” the 25-year-old Cebuano pride said. “Masaya kasi napasaya namin yung mga taga Cebu at nagpapasalamat ako sa PBA, ganun din sa mga coaching staff namin magkakaroon nanaman kami ng pagkakataon para i-represent yung country.”

Romeo, however, is well aware it’s the just first step of many in the journey toward sustaining their supremacy in the regional scene.

“Alam ko meron pa kaming maipapakita, may mai-improve pa kami so hindi kami pwedeng ma-satisfy,” Romeo said. “Kailangan mas mag-learn pa kami, matuto pa kami kasi short nga yung preparation."
