Batang Gilas hold off Kazakhstan to earn shot at fifth place against Japan

THE Philippines beat Kazakhstan, 86-74, on Wednesday in the classification round of the Fiba-Asia Under-18 Championship in Doha.

Paul Desiderio had 19 points and eight rebounds while Radge Tongco had 13 points as Batang Gilas moved up to play Japan for fifth place on Thursday.

The Under-18 cagers' title quest ended on Tuesday with a loss to Chinese Taipei.

The Philippines jumped out to a 19-6 lead against Kazakhstan and held on until the end despite being outscored, 23-13, in the third.
