Gritty Batang Gilas falls short in Fiba World U17 debut against tall Angola

THE Philippines lost to Angola, 82-72, on Friday to open up its campaign in the Fiba Under-17 World Championship in Dubai.

Jolo Mendoza had 16 points, Jollo Go added 13, and Diego Dario chipped in 12 for Batang Gilas, who were only trailing 15-12 in the first quarter in their Group A encounter.

The Philippine U-17 team was down, 41-32, at halftime over the powerhouse African squad, who eventually went on to lead for the most part of the game.

Joao Jungo had 26 points and 11 rebounds while Valdir Manuel added 16 points and 13 rebounds for the taller Angola team, who had a 70-46 rebounding edge over the Philippines.

The Batang Gilas will next face Greece on Saturday before wrapping up the preliminaries against the United States on Monday.
