LOCAL sports bettors had mixed emotions about Gilas Pilipinas’ 93-84 loss to France in the opener of the Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Tuesday night.

While sad that the Filipino dribblers lost to Les Bleus, fans who bet on the Philippines in the point-spread game took consolation that they won their respective wagers as Gilas stayed well within the points spread.

According to sources, oddsmakers installed Gilas as a +16.5 underdog, meaning bettors who picked the host side can still win if the team loses by 16 points or less.

That meant a big payoff for bettors like Marc Ordinanza.

“Syempre happy kahit papaano,” said Ordinanza, a late 20s father of one who works at a multinational information technology company. “(Mataas yung) odds so katakot tayaan, baka matambakan, pero winnable yung game.”

Ordinanza has reason to celebrate as his P10,000 bet won him double, eventually taking home P9,000 after deducting a 10-percent bookie fee.

Still, he would've preferred a double celebration.

“Parati na lang tayo, ‘Kaya naman eh. Kinapos lang,’” Ordinanza said.
