Korea conquers Chinese Taipei to walk away as new FIBA Asia U16 champion

KOREA beat Chinese Taipei, 78-69, to capture its first-ever Fiba-Asia Under-16 Championship crown on Saturday in Jakarta.

Minwoo Park and Lee Junghyun had 17 points each for the Sokors, who became the first champion after China since the tournament’s inception in 2009 .

Both Korea and Chinese Taipei, however, booked berths in next year’s FIBA Under-17 World Championship in Spain after hurdling their respective semifinal opponents.

Meanwhile, deposed champion China secured the last berth for Asia in next year’s world championship with an 80-58 rout of  Japan.

The Philippines salvaged fifth place as the Batang Gilas cagers beat Lebanon, 89-74. The Filipinos also lost to the Koreans in the second round of the preliminary, 77-74.

Kuwait placed seventh after beating Thailand, 69-49.
