BOCAUE — Juan Gomez de Liaño said he will gladly accept if given the opportunity to play again for the national team in 3x3.

Gomez de Liaño donned the national tri-colors in the Fiba 3x3 Under-18 World Cup last year in China with AJ Edu, Encho Serrano and Rhayyan Amsali. The Filipinos made it to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Belgium.

“Why not?” De Liaño said when asked about a callup to the nationals for a 3x3 event in the future.

“If there’s an opportunity, I’ll grab it naman. It’s for the Philippines, so if I have the chance, why not?,” added De Liano, who was at the 2018 Fiba 3x3 World Cup at Philippine Arena on Sunday.

“Just being able to compete with 3x3 players all around the world, getting to meet new people and new friends, sobrang laking bagay noon para sa akin.”

The Maroons guard is happy that the Filipinos now get to witness top-caliber 3x3.

“The fact na yung 3x3, lumalaki na siya eh and it’s catching up sa five-on-five game. You can see it sa crowd, sa dami ng taong nanonood and we really appreciate the love and support they’re giving for the Filipinos,” he said.

Though the 18-year-old came to the venue as a spectator, he still had a chance to chat with some of the stars who hit the court, none bigger than French dunker Guy Dupuy.

“I was just asking him, trying to be a sponge, sucking in information on how he does things and how he jumps that high because he’s also training NBA players,” Gomez de Liaño shared.

The UP guard said it’s exactly the essence of events like this: bringing the players and fans together in a celebration of the sport.

“That’s the main thing out here, you get to meet people and learn.”
