Jayson Castro sees no problem deferring to other teammates as Gilas' new go-to guys

JAYSON Castro welcomed Terrence Romeo and the scoring punch he has recently been providing for Gilas Pilipinas ahead of the Fiba Asia Championship.

Romeo flaunted his scoring prowess anew by firing 18 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter in the national team’s 84-81 win over New Zealand’s Wellington in the MVP Cup on Saturday.

“Sobrang sarap kasi nakakapag-stay lang ako sa corner for spot-ups,” said Castro, Gilas’ go-to guy in recent international tournaments. “At the same time, ganun rin yung role niya kapag ako naman yung naka-atake.”

“Hindi na lang puro ako,” he added. “Na-co-conserve ko rin yung energy ko para sa defense naman.”

True enough, Castro didn’t have to exert most of his energy on offense, only contributing seven points as he dished out six assists on top of five boards in 27 minutes.

“Ayaw ko rin makipag-agawan sa scoring kasi may Andray Blatche kami , Terrence, and Ranidel (de Ocampo),” Castro said.

What delights Castro more is that Romeo has been heeding his advice since they’ve been roommates in Estonia and Taiwan.

“Marami siyang tinatanong tungkol sa international game,” Castro related. “Sobrang tuwa ko na yung mga advice ko, nagagawa niya sa game.”

“At sobrang ganda ng improvement niya, especially yung decision making niya, unlike before, ‘di ba?” he added. “At least ngayon na-i-involve na niya yung mga teammates niya.”
