WITH Jaymar Perez’s return to the spotlight after a difficult year comes the comparisons between the promising college player with PBA and Gilas Pilipinas star Calvin Abueva.

A former Stag whose skills were measured against the former King Stag, Perez again dons colors that Abueva has worn well as he suits up for a young Gilas 5.0 side in the Fiba Asia Challenge Cup.

The Stag-turned-Eagle-turned-Pirate is waving off the comparisons.

"Hindi ko mama-match yun," said Perez of Calvin Abueva’s achievements. "Iba 'yun. Iba naman talent ko kay Calvin. Pero kung tutuusin marami pa akong kakaining bigas para matapatan 'yun."

Both are high-energy players who can carry their teams on their shoulders, but Perez noted they play different positions and have different playing styles.

Abueva plays forward despite standing just a shade over 6-foot-1 while Perez is playing point guard for the Philippine team that starts the Challenge Cup campaign against India on Friday.

Perez, once dubbed 'Baby Beast' during his days with San Sebastian, is starting to get comfortable in his new role.

"Comfortable naman ako sa pagiging point guard," he said. "Nung una pa lang sinabihan na ako. Tingin ko magiging effective ako. Sana may matulong ako dun sa Iran."
