Gary David says hot-shooting show against Korea not meant to boost Final 12 hopes

TAIPEI - Gary David is one of the players widely viewed to be on the Gilas Pilipinas cut line for the Fiba Asia Championship, but he insisted his fine shooting performance in the Jones Cup loss to Korea on Sunday had nothing to do with it.

Instead, the veteran gunner from Meralco said he merely went out to try and fulfill his role under Tab Baldwin's system, especially with fellow marksman Dondon Hontiveros sitting out the game with a minor injury.

"Ginagawa ko lang naman ang papel ko," said David, who scored 16 points against the Koreans in his finest game since being called up for the national pool put together by Baldwin.

"Alam ko naman na kailangan namin ng outside shooting, lalo na wala si Dondon," he added inside a gloomy Gilas bus moments after the loss. "At buti naman pumapasok ang mga tira ko, pero 'yon lang 'yon."

Asked if he is confident of making Baldwin's Final 12 for the Fiba Asia showpiece in Changsha, China next month, the former Lyceum guard said he can't afford to worry about that during games.

"Hindi ko iniisip 'yon," he said. "Nandito lang naman ako para magsilbi sa bayan."
