Chot Reyes faces tough choices after board lifts limit on Gilas call-ups per PBA team

NEWLY appointed PBA commissioner Willie Marcial is leaving it up to coach Chot Reyes on whether to immediately take advantage of the lifting of the limit on players Gilas Pilipinas can pick per team.

"Na kay coach na 'yung desisyon," said Marcial on Thursday after the board approved a motion allowing Reyes to call up multiple players from the 12 pro league teams for inclusion in the Gilas pool.

Under a previous agreement between the Sahamang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and the PBA, Gilas was limited to drafting one cadet player and one veteran per team.

Reyes' selection of players for the Gilas pool for the first two qualifying windows for the 2019 Fiba World Cup were guided by that principle.

But given the proximity of the next Gilas matches against Australia and Japan, Marcial doubts if Reyes would adapt the new policy and make wholesale changes to his current pool.

"Masyadong dikit na especially sa second window (FIBA World Cup qualifier). Baka sa mga susunod na rounds na," added Marcial, who was promoted to full-time commissioner during the first monthly board meeting held Thursday at the PBA office in Libis.

"Pero siyempre kay coach Chot pa rin ang last say."

Marcial also took the occasion to thank the board for its all-out support of his leadership and the national team.
