IF Calvin Abueva had it his way, he would have joined the Philippine team that will compete in the 2017 Fiba 3x3 World Cup in Nantes, France next week.

As much as he wanted to, the Alaska star said he wasn't given the green light to suit up for the Chooks-Pilipinas 3x3 team which will now be bannered by Jeron Teng, Kiefer Ravena, Kobe Paras, and NLEX bruiser JR Quiñahan.

Abueva, though, is hoping he will be able to fly he flag again when the country hosts the tournament next year.

"Gusto ko maglaro kaso di pumayag management. Baka next year makasali kami," said Abueva during the team's sendoff on Wednesday at the Crowne Plaza in Ortigas.

Still, Abueva expressed his confidence in the coach Eric Altamirano-led squad.

"Good luck sa games nila. Sana wag nila kalimutan na team kayong maglalaro para makakuha tayo ng gold dito," he said.

A veteran of 3x3 competitions, Abueva offers his advice to the Filipino dribblers, who will go up against the host team, El Salvador, Slovenia, and Romania in the June 17-21 showpiece.

"More mental dito. Suggestion ko focus lang at gawin yung best para manalo," he said. "Hindi biro mga kalaban e. Malalaki at magagaling pa. World (championships) na 'to e."
