New Zealand simply too much for cold Gilas Youth in U16 Asia Cup

Gilas Youth now plays the waiting game on who they'll face in the qualification to the quarterfinals

GILAS Pilipinas Youth lost to New Zealand, 85-54, on Tuesday at the close of the group stage of the FIBA U16 Asia Cup in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The Philippines finished Group B with a 1-2 win-loss record entering the qualification to the quarterfinals match, their opponent still to be determined pending the result of the match-up between Chinese Taipei and Indonesia.

Gilas Youth will face either Group A second-placer Bahrain if the Philippines ends up at third in Group B or Group A third-placer Lebanon if the Nationals took the second spot in Group B.

Jhustin Hallare had 13 points, and Mark Jhello Lumagub had 11 points and seven rebounds for Gilas Youth in the defeat.

Gilas Youth only shot 26 percent from the field, while being outrebounded by the Junior Tall Blacks, 61-34, in the contest.

The Junior Tall Blacks’ gap slowly grew over the course of the game with the 31-point lead being the largest.

Liam Anthony Keogh had 17 points, four rebounds, and seven assists, while Lawson Pryor had 15 points and six rebounds for New Zealand, which shot 41 percent from the field.
