SAMAHANG Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) knows all eyes will be on the Philippines when it co-hosts the Fiba Basketball World Cup in 2023.

That's why according to SBP chairman emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan, the federation has already begun its initial planning and preparatoin for the 2023 conclave even before the ongoing World Cup concludes in China.

"SBP has started to plan and prepare for 2023," he said in a tweet on Friday.

"We need to supply to spectators and guests an experience like never before, and demonstrate Filipino hospitality. Much pressure on our Gilas Team though - which is good. Ergo, let’s do better. Puso! #LabanPilipinas!"

SBP officials led by executive director Sonny Barrios have been in China for the past two weeks to observe the proceedings and how the Local Organizing Committee had dealt with the logistics of holding an event as big as the World Cup.

Also part of the SBP team in China were Cito Martelino, son of longtime basketball official Moying, and Xander Gubat.

Four of the eight first-round groups in the global hoops showpiece will be hosted in the country, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and Mall of Asia Arena.

Both of those venues previously hosted home games for Gilas Pilipinas in the Asian qualifiers of the 2019 Fiba World Cup.

Okinawa and Jakarta will each host two first round groups and one second round pairings.

The final is eyed to be held at the collosal Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

Curiously, the Philippines and Japan, two of the three joint hosts for the next World Cup, finished as the bottom two squads in the 32-team field.
