BOCAUE — Mongolia found its stroke from long distance just in time to deal the Philippines a 21-17 defeat on Saturday in the 2018 Fiba 3x3 World Cup at the Philippine Arena.
The loss dropped the 19th-ranked Philippines to 1-1 in Pool C and served as a reality check for the hosts after the high of a 15-7 win over No. 6 Brazil in the 20-team showpiece.
Tsenguunbayar Gotov drained seven points including a pair of two-pointers, none bigger that the game-clinching long bomb that gave the Mongolians the four-point victory.
Delgernyam Davaasambuu and Tserenbaatar Enkhtaivan each scored six points as they collectively dampened the mood of a sizeable crowd inside the world’s largest indoor arena.
Unlike the Philippines’ first game against Brazil, physicality did not favor the home team as a pair of unsportsmalike fouls whistled on Troy Rosario and Roger Pogoy hurt its chances.
Davaasambuu and Gotov then found their rhythm from deep to give 11th-seed Mongolia its first win.
Pogoy paced the Filipinos with six points, as Rosario and Pringle both had four in the losing cause.
The Philippines rounds up its schedule on Monday when it takes on Canada and Russia.
The scores:
MONGOLIA 21 — Gotov 7, Davaasambuu 6, Enkhtaivan 6, Enkhbat 2.
PHILIPPINES 17 — Pogoy 6, Pringle 4, Rosario 4, Standhardinger 3.
