GILAS Pilipinas consented to coach Yeng Guiao’s endorsement to have the final cuts in Gilas Pilipinas’ official World Cup roster join the team in its campaign in China.

Team manager Gabby Cui said the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has no problem bringing along Marcio Lassiter, Matthew Wright, Poy Erram, and Beau Belga to the world meet despite missing out on the August 31 to Sept. 15 tournament,

It’s the option now of the four whether they will go with their brothers or not.

“They have the option if they want to go so we can arrange and pay for their hotel, travel, tickets to the game,” said Cui.

So far, only Lassiter has availed of the offer as he will be traveling together with his family, while Wright and Erram are likely to stay at home and do the rehab on their respective injuries and be ready for the coming PBA Governors Cup.

“I’m still talking to Beau and see what his plans are,” said Cui of the burly Rain or Shine stalwart.

“Of course, we wanted them to be there. They really helped us, they sacrificed a lot for the country the past few months, sacrificing their bodies and time in what we do in practice every day. So we really appreciated what they did.”

Guiao brought up the idea to the SBP shortly before the Gilas twelve were revealed on Sunday.

The national mentor though, understands the situation of those who are injured especially Erram (knee) and Wright (ankle).

“Their situation especially the injured guys, if they go to China, they might not be able to rehab for the PBA third conference. So medyo magigipit din sila,” said Guiao. “So their time might be better spent here rehabbing for the third conference.”

Although also still recovering from an MCL sprain, Lassiter chose to go and support the team.

“We appreciate that,” said Guiao. “Although they (San Miguel) won’t play right away after the World Cup, so he still has time (to rehab).

“But the rest, like us at NLEX, we’re going to play right away (in the Governors) Cup. Si Rain or Shine is the same with Beau (Belga). So they’re also considering their situation with their mother teams for the third conference.”
