    MVP retains seat in Fiba central board ahead of World Cup hosting turnover

    CHINA will officially turn over to the Philippines along with Japan and Jakarta the hosting rights to the FIBA World Cup 2023.

    Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) chairman emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan leads the delegation that will formally accept the hosting of the 2023 showpiece. He will be joined by Yuko Mitsuya of Japan and Indonesia’s Erick Thohir.

    The 2023 conclave will mark the first time three countries will be hosting basketball's biggest event.

    Also with Pangilinan as part of the SBP group are PBA chairman Ricky Vargas and SBP executive director Sonny Barrios, who led the Filipino delegation that observed the hosting China did this year.

    The turnover ceremony will be held during halftime of the championship game between Spain and Argentina at Wukesong Arena in Beijing.

    Meanwhile during the FIBA Central Board meeting on Saturday, Pangilinan was co-opted to join the new members of the board along with retired Chinese great Yao Ming.

    The new board convened during the XXI FIBA Congress under newly-elected president Hamane Niang of Mali, succeeding Argentina’s Horacio Muratore, Niang will serve as FIBA chief until 2023.

    Mark Tatum, deputy commissioner of the NBA, kept his position as NBA representative to the FIBA board, while Germany’s Dirk Nowitzki, who recently retired with the Dallas MVMavericks, was appointed chairman of the Players Commission, replacing Vlade Divac.
