JAMIE Malonzo isn’t denying that he has something to prove in Gilas Pilipinas’ upcoming campaign in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers.

The 29-year-old returned to Manila for the first time since he was left without a ball club last October when he was released by B.League squad Kyoto, just a few months after opting to move to Japan instead of staying with Barangay Ginebra.

“I’m excited and motivated, of course. Awesome time,” he said.

When asked to elaborate on why he is motivated, he answered: “Of course, there’s a certain motivation. Just the situation. Of course, I want to always prove my worth, show what I can do.”

Malonzo was professional in dealing with the shocking release from the Hannaryz, who, as they explained, went with a different direction in order to become competitive.

“I think it’s part of the business, it’s part of the game. Every team needs to make adjustments to be successful. I think it’s just something that the team needed. I don't think it’s anything personal or anything skill-related," he said.

“I think it’s just that they really needed big men at the time. So it’s nothing to be frustrated about. Just focus on my next goal, next team, next situation.”

Just Gilas, for now

The Fil-Am high-flyer said his focus right now is with Gilas, while also hopeful that he will eventually land with a club team sooner than later.

“Still focused on the same goal. I think it’s important to stay positive and just keep attacking my next day, next goal. My priority is Gilas and then hopefully, something transpires,” he said.

Hounded by injuries even during the latter part of his stint with the Gin Kings, Malonzo also feels a lot fresher, as he had time to rest and recover before this national team tour of duty.

“I feel like I’m very healthy right now. Very healthy. I just want to keep going for sure. Extra motivation always,” he said.
