KELLY Williams hopes his sons would soon follow in his footsteps and play for the Philippine national basketball team.

In fact, the newly minted nine-time PBA champion has expressed his desire to have them obtain their Philippine passports as soon as possible - the first step for them to become eligible to play Gilas Pilipinas as locals.

The 42-year-old Williams has been posting clips of his eldest son Charlie on Instagram. One video that caught the eye of many fans months ago was when Kelly threw down a dunk on a pass off the backboard by Charlie.

“He is in his freshman in high school. I’m trying to work on his passport to potentially play in the 16-under [tournament],” said Williams of his son, who based on the videos could soon be taller than his 6-foot-6 father.

Williams’ eldest son will soon turn 15 years old, still with enough time to comply with a Fiba rule mandating players to secure passports of the country he or she wants to represent as a local before turning 16.

His youngest son, Roman, on the other hand, is aged 12, and could soon follow in the footsteps of his brother and father. There are also clips of Roman in Kelly’s Instagram page.

Williams has previously played for the national team even before it became known as Gilas Pilipinas. One of his early stints in the national team came in the 2007 Fiba Asia Championship, and he later became part of Smart Gilas in the same tournament in 2011 coached by Rajko Toroman.

The TNT veteran sees his sons as being better players than he is.

“He (Charlie) is going to be way better than me for sure,” said Williams, whose resume also include a 2008 PBA MVP award. “He is already on track. He will be 15 in two weeks.”
