JUSTIN Brownlee and Pelita Jaya bowed to the Hiroshima Dragonflies, 69-86, on Sunday at the start of the Basketball Champions League (BCL) Asia 2024 at the Sheikh Saeed Bin Maktoum Sports Hall in Dubai, UAE.
Pelita Jaya got into the tournament through qualifying but proved no match for the Dragonflies, the newly crowned Japan B.League champions who were led by Toshiki Kamisawa's 20 points and Dwayne Evans' 18 points and 23 boards.
Brownlee leads Pelita Jaya
Brownlee led Pelita Jaya with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals in 21 minutes. But the Ginebra resident import went just 4-of-9 from the field and committed three turnovers against the Dragonflies.
Fellow import James Dickey added 11 points and 17 boards for Pelita Jaya while Indonesian national team mainstay Brandon Jawato added 10 points.
Pelita Jaya next meets Iranian side Shahrdary Gorgan on Monday in its second match Group B, where the top two teams advance to the playoffs. Hiroshima goes for win No. 2 against Korean league champ KCC Egis.
